1 Find your radio serial number

BMW has two ways of retrieving the radio serial number, depending on the year of your vehicle.

Type 1 — for 2000 and newer BMW vehicles

  • With the key in the OFF position, press and hold the "M" button on the radio.
  • While still holding M, turn the key on and turn on the radio.
  • The radio serial number will appear on the display.
  • Write it down — and double-check for accuracy. A wrong number delays your code.
  • If the serial doesn't display, see Type 2 below.

Type 2 — for 2000 and older BMW vehicles

Older BMW models require you to remove the radio from the vehicle to read the serial number on its label.

Heads Up: Some vehicles require the radio to be removed to retrieve the radio serial number. Our service does not include radio removal. Free vehicle-specific removal videos are often available on YouTube by searching for your vehicle’s year, make, and model followed by “radio removal.”

2 Find your vehicle's VIN

Your Vehicle Identification Number is the 17-character code that uniquely identifies your car.

  • Usually visible at the bottom of the driver's side windshield.
  • Also on your registration, insurance card, and the door jamb sticker.
